“Mike’s play a great success” – The Corkman

A NEWMARKET playwright is feeling the first flush of success after his debut play received enthusiastic plaudits after taking the stage on home soil, and played by local actors.

Mike Guerin of Lisdangan began dabbling in comedy and sketches when he was a student at UCC and his first full play, ‘Alpha’ took to the stage recently in a production by Newmarket Drama Group.

He told The Corkman that he put forward his play for submission to the Newmarket Drama Group and was delighted when it got the nod of approval. He said with the drama group any member, or indeed anyone, can submit their work.

He describes ‘Alpha’ as being a play about power and what it can do to people. It features a politician and his “cohorts in a bar.” There’s also an element of how people look down on others, whom they believe are socially inferior to them.

He said in his play, there is an elderly man who doesn’t engage at all with society and simply sits at the bar drinking.
